About Me

I am an educational technology researcher, currently finalising my PhD on technology adoption in higher education. With a background in psychology I have spent the last four years researching how to design and implement emerging technologies at scale in complex educational environments. I have extensive experience in data driven technology evaluation, as well as working with stakeholders to support technology adoption. I am a strong communicator and researcher with a passion for supporting the digitalisation of institutions in the modern world.

My Research Interests

Technology Adoption

As the world increasingly moves towards digitalisation, individuals in the workplace are facing rapid introduction of new technologies in their daily workflows. I'm interested in supporting the design and implementation of these new technologies to minimise friction and increase performance.

The Digital Divide: Technology & Inequality

As the world modernises, so digital literacy will have a larger effect on individuals daily lives. Addressing this 'digital divide' is essential to create effective and sustainable change for the future. Ensuring that digital tools are implemented in a way which takes these different levels of prior skills into account is essential in effective technology adoption.

AI to Support Learning

AI provides a promising avenue for creating adaptive and personalised education which can be easily scaled to met the needs of individuals. LLMs also show promise as potentially powerful means of analysing and making sense of large amounts of text data in order to provide adaptive supports.

Self-Regulated Learning

In the modern day students are expected to be independent learners who spend a large amount of time studying autonomously. The introduction of technology enhanced learning tools is further highlighting the importance of understanding and supporting effective self-regulation.

Learning Analytics

More of our day-to-day activities are taking place in digital environments, and with the help of digital tools. This results in the generation of large amounts of data which can provide valuable insight into how technology is being used, and how it can be improved to support performance at an individual and team level.

Online & Digital Education

Online and digital education comes with many benefits for modern education, but also has unique challenges associated with it. It is important to understand and remember both when designing education for these environments.

PhD Candidate in Learning Analytics

Project: Using a Conversational Agent to Support Self-Regulated Learning and Performance

Expected Defence: 2025

During this project I designed, developed, and evaluated a conversational agent, built to improve self-regulation and performance in higher education settings. In this project I carried out multiple research studies, collecting and analysing data from a large range of sources. I have collaborated with experts from various disciplines, published several papers on this topic, and extensively presented my work both inside and outside of the academic industry.

Social Data Science Fellow

Project Title: LLM Assisted Text-Mining to Understand and Support Students SRL Processes

A 4-month full-time fellowship in the ODISSEI Social Data Science Team of the Methodology & Statistics Department at Utrecht University. In this project I conceptualised and tested an approach to using a large language model as a deductive coding tool for textual data. This project focuses on open science and reproducible methods, and an on-going repository can be found online: https://github.com/GabrielleMVJ

Erasmus University Rotterdam

Lecturer & Program Coordinator

A 2-year position as a lecturer and program coordinator of the MSc Psychology of Digital Media program, a fully online interdisciplinary degree offered by Erasmus University. I taught 10 courses across 2-years covering the impact that technology has had on the fields of organisational, cognitive, and educational psychology. I supported in the process of preparing, updating, and evaluating the course content during and between cohorts to ensure constructive alignment, and effective delivery of online education. I also supervised several Master's theses on the topic of conversational agents in education.

May 2022-May 2024
Community for Learning Innovation

ErasmusU Online Fellow

A 2-year position running parallel to my teaching position. During this project I led a multidisciplinary team as we carried out an evaluation of the fully online MSc Psychology of Digital Media program, with a focus on the digital format of the program in a post-covid environment. This project aimed to evaluate the implementation and adoption of digital educational tools, by examining the effects and performance of students, educators, and administrative staff. We finalised this project with a report on how, and the extent to which this technology had been adopted, alongside recommendations for future innovative technology projects.
